Many of our daily actions and habits come from childhood. Our parents raised us in a certain way and we want to instill the same values and educate our children in the same way, convinced that it is good for their health and their development. However, some seemingly safe actions are sometimes risky.
We have today listed for you those actions that seem to be good habits, but that can actually hurt your child.
1 Sit with your back straight
How often do mothers repeat to their children: “Stand up straight!” It turns out, however, that sitting upright is not a good idea. Studies suggest that the comfortable posture we take instinctively by leaning against the back of the chair and relaxing a little, is the most useful. When sitting at a 135 ° angle, the vertebrae, as well as the muscles and ligaments associated with them, are under minimal load.
And when a person sits for a long time with their backs straight, we can clearly observe the movements of the intervertebral discs. Therefore, orthopedic surgeons recommend that children sit in a relaxed position but have support behind their backs.
2 Prefer to wear a backpack
It is well known that it is best to wear a bag where the load is evenly distributed over the back and both shoulders rather than just a bag where the load is fully carried on one shoulder. But this fact is not as obvious as that. In order for the binder to not hurt the back, it should have orthopedic support and be worn at least 5 cm above the waist. Otherwise, it becomes harmful and the load on the spine increases considerably.
Improperly wearing a backpack can cause pain or even develop scoliosis or kyphosis in schoolchildren. Therefore, orthopedic surgeons recommend monitoring the correct position of the bag on the back of your children and not putting too much weight on it.
3 Use an antibacterial gel to wash your hands
The use of antibacterial wipes and gels weakens the protective function of the skin and may result in decreased immunity in children.
The triclosan contained in hand sanitizers increases the resistance of bacteria to antibiotics and promotes the appearance of super bacteria, that is to say new resistant forms. In addition, the gel not only kills harmful bacteria, but also all the flora of the hands, which decreases the level of immunity of the body. We are aware of cases in which such hygiene products have immediately affected children in a negative way, with the appearance of skin irritations and signs of poisoning. If you have access to water and soap, it’s better!
4 Brush your teeth after each meal and use a mouthwash
Brushing teeth after each meal is not considered useful, because used too frequently, toothpaste disrupts the acid-base balance of the mouth and destroys tooth enamel. Saliva must fulfill its natural role of purifying and maintaining oral balance. The same goes for the use of mouthwashes, which affect the mucosa negatively, especially in children.
On the other hand, you can teach your child to use dental floss, which really helps clean teeth and freshen breath.
5 Drinking milk
Milk is firmly associated with childhood and is considered a healthy product that fills the lack of calcium in the body. However, studies suggest exactly the opposite. Casein – a protein found in milk – increases the acidity of the stomach and forces the body to use minerals, including calcium, whose deficiency leads to osteoporosis. Some studies even raise the carcinogenicity of casein. At the age of 10-11, the body stops producing the enzyme that breaks down casein, so that milk no longer benefits teenagers and adults. Nutritionists recommend eating fermented dairy products and avoiding whole milk.
6 Do “useful” activities and avoid loitering
Children must be busy to develop physically and intellectually, and we do them a maximum of activities, in order to enrich them and increase their endurance. But an already busy school program and extra activities can cause chronic stress. In turn, stress causes hormonal changes that lead to decreased immunity, metabolic disorders, and many other problems.
One must not be afraid of idleness: boredom is the necessary condition for the proper development of the psyche of the child, it allows him to “get back to zero”.
7 Keep the nails short
It is often thought that cutting very short nails to children is more hygienic. However, dermatologists say that this can cause an infection under the nail. In addition, after a while, the fingertips may become rougher and the nails can incarnate.
Therefore, it is necessary to leave a small white nail line, cut them straight and file them carefully to avoid any infection.
Among the recommendations of specialists, we were particularly surprised by the position to adopt to avoid back problems when sitting. Did you already know that some of these habits, at first glance useful, could affect the health of your child? Do not hesitate to give us your opinion in the comments!
